Making Time for Yourself and Stalking Cas Anvar

He wants you to take a break. Let it happen.
Unemployment is a limbo state, and that applies mentally just as much as it does literally. You're not working, so you really don't have anywhere to be in the morning. At that same time, everyone reminds you that you're not on vacation either. So, you drag yourself out of bed in the morning to go to work for the worst boss you'll ever have - your own cocktail of shame and desperation. If there is one absolute rule that I will put out there, it's that you should always put yourself first - even when you're working for yourself. This means making time for your guilty pleasures, taking a break from doing anything productive, reading a book, keeping up with your favorite shows, going out with your friends, and everything else that you can think of. Getting a job is important, but keeping your morale up is integral to that.

For me, that guilty pleasure was Assassin's Creed. That's right, the old #AC. There's something innately and deeply appealing about a game that lets you climb anywhere, run anywhere, jump anywhere, and go anywhere - especially since I found myself in quite the opposite circumstance. Altair became a bit a of role model for me. I mean, he was everything I wished I could be at that very moment. He was rippling fit, while I was gaining five pounds every other week. He worked outside every day, while I found myself trapped in my apartment for weeks at a time. And, here's the kicker, he was probably getting a paycheck in his world. And then, on top of that, he was raised into it. He didn't have to interview or audition for the other assassins! He never had to write up a resume highlighting all the different ways that he could stab people! Cue collective sigh.

More recently, now that I'm employed in a rather stable position, I couldn't help but find myself occasionally looking back on that era of my life. It got me thinking about the guy behind the mask - Cas Anvar. What else has he been in? Well, researching that list has revealed it to be very very extensive. Besides Altair, his credits include Lost, In Plain Sight, Castle, Argo, and Source Code. I looked all those roles up, and I had no idea that it was the same guy!

And what is he doing now? I'm glad you asked person who let me put words in their mouth. Now he's working on a web series called Nobility - which is apparently like "The Office" - if the whole shebang took place on the Serenity, and then "Star Trek" happened. All of this and the whole team is apparently going to be making a splash at #FantasyCon - that awesome convention that will be happening a couple of days from now in Salt Lake City.

Okay, this is the kind of guilty pleasure that needs your attention regardless of your employment status. If you're an old-school Scifi fan, a hardcore Trekkie, or a lover of all things Cas Anvar, then this is exactly the kind of thing that you need to be making time for. Looking for work is important; finding a paying job is important. However, you won't be nearly as effective if  you don't take the time to sate those passions, and surround yourself with the things that you love.

For me, that was Assassin's Creed #AC. For a long time before that, it's been all things Scifi. Looking back, I wish I had given myself the time to enjoy the things that I loved. A lot of people don't realize this, but your passions and your loves are your anchors. When the seas get rough and the thunder starts to rumble, they're going to pull you though.

So stay passionate, and don't let yourself turn into the boss that you never wanted.
